QuickTricks welcomes newer players!

Scroll to the bottom of this page for the Newer Player Tip of the Week.

The club offers multiple opportunities for newer players to play and learn:

The StartUp game -- for those with 0-20 masterpoints-- every Monday at 6:45 PM (holidays excepted).  Play 18 boards with others at your level.  $10 table fee, masterpoints awarded.  Note:  a minimum of 4 tables is required to award masterpoints.  The game may be cancelled and players moved to the 499er game if attendance is insufficient.  Contact QuickTricks new player coordinator Amelia Kaymen at [email protected] if you need a partner.

Mentoring Program

Note:  the Mentoring Program is on hiatus in August and September and will resume on October 5.

The club's mentoring program is held on the first Monday of the month.  To sign up for mentoring, as either a mentor (open game players) or a mentee (499er and StartUp (0-20) players) send Mentoring Program Coordinator Brandi Chavin an email at [email protected].

The club offers two mentoring opportunities:

Play with a mentor in the open game:

More experienced mentees can play with a mentor in the open game (regular $10 table fee and masterpoints).  You will be assigned a partner for your first mentoring session.  The mentor and mentee can then decide to continue playing together or to try out new mentors/mentees.  This form is not suitable for players who have recently graduated from the beginner class or are new to bridge.

Play at a separate teaching table:

We will have a separate teaching table which is not part of the regular games with three or four learners and a mentor ($5, no masterpoints).  Players can stop to ask questions and play without any time limits or pressure.  We will try to assign mentees who are at similar experience levels to the teaching table.   This form is suitable for all players.

Both mentors and mentees can participate in the program whenever they wish, from once a year to every first Monday.  No ongoing commitment is required. One mentoring session is better than none!  While we hope to be able to accommodate all interested players, the scope and success of the program depends entirely on the level of participation on both ends.  We cannot guarantee anyone a mentor or mentee for any given session, although we will try our best.

Chalk Talks on the first Monday of the month at 6:00. The Chalk Talks are short, informative talks on topics of interest to beginning and intermediate players, given by QuickTricks advanced players.  See the Chalk Talks page for the schedule and details.

Newer Player Tip of the Week:

The club does not allow live cell phones during the game.  If your phone rings, you will receive a quarter board penalty.  Did you know that Apple iPhones have a special feature called Focus?  Focus allows you to turn off notifications and other noisemakers during a specific time period.  You can also schedule Focus to turn on and off -- for example, from 6:45 to 10 PM on Monday nights.   All you iPhone users now have an easy way to avoid being penalized for violating the club's cell phone policy.  Android users, you're on your own.  Please, no ringing cell phones!
